Strategic White Outlines

A simple trick that dramatically improves edge definition

What Are White Outlines?

A thin white outline (usually 1–3 pixels) placed around your design or text can dramatically improve how clean and professional your DTF print looks.

This simple technique creates a clean separation between your artwork and the shirt color underneath. It is especially effective on dark garments or when you have detailed edges that might otherwise bleed or lose definition.

When to use white outlines:
  • Text and lettering
  • Logos with fine details
  • Designs going on dark or colored shirts
  • Any design where you want maximum edge crispness

How to Add Them

In most design programs, you can add a white stroke or outline around your main elements. A 1–3 pixel white stroke is usually ideal. Too thick and it may look heavy; too thin and it may not be effective.

White outlines work particularly well in combination with strategic use of the garment color and halftones to create breathable, great-looking prints that feel lighter on the body.

Pro Tip

If you're unsure whether a white outline would help your design, feel free to upload it and ask us during the design review process (paid service). We can quickly advise you on whether it would improve the final result.
